Closet solutions that work for YOU

In the age of social media, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that every aspect of our lives needs to be Instagram or Pinterest-worthy, including our closets. We see perfectly curated images of color-coordinated clothing, neatly stacked shelves, and labeled bins, and we think that's the standard we need to meet…

But let's take a step back and remind ourselves of the true purpose of a closet: functionality.

Closets are meant to serve a practical purpose – to store and organize our belongings in a way that makes them easily accessible and efficient to use. Instead of striving for picture-perfect perfection, let's focus on creating closet organization systems that actually work for us in our day-to-day lives.

Now this doesn’t mean run to Ikea or Target and buy the quick storage solution. Often you will waste money on these because they are “one size fits all” type of products. Most likely you have all different sizes items in your closet that need to be assessed first.

Here are some tips for achieving functional closet organization:

  • Assess Your Needs: Before diving into a closet overhaul, take stock of what you actually need from your closet. Are you primarily storing clothing, shoes, accessories, or a combination of these? Do you need more hanging space, shelves, or drawers? Understanding your specific storage needs will guide your organization efforts.

  • Declutter Regularly: Start this process by just touching items in your space regularly. This will help you feel more connected to what’s actually in your space and make it easier to part with items that are no longer serving you. The longer you leave something untouched, the more overwhelming the decluttering process can be.

  • Remove Items that Don’t Belong: Your kids clothes, costumes, prom dress from 15 years ago, all don't belong in your everyday closet. When we store things that aren’t for our styling purposes in our closet it creates chaos when getting ready in the morning.

  • Keep Everyday Items Accessible: Arrange your closet so that the items you use most frequently are easily accessible. Keep everyday clothing within arm's reach, while seasonal or occasional items can be stored in less accessible areas such as a hallway closet.

Think Outside the Box: Don't be afraid to think creatively when it comes to closet organization. You can organize by color, item type or by occasion.

  • Embrace Imperfection: Finally, embrace the imperfections of your closet. It's okay if it doesn't look like something out of a magazine – what matters most is that it functions effectively for your needs. Stop striving for perfection and start embracing the beauty of a closet that works for you.
